My First Tournament - Help Me!

So, im going to be asking the 40k community for assistance on two fronts...

1.) What one tip would you give someone going to play their first tournament? My guess is playtest your list well, but with that in mind, what else? What tips should I remember when playing against the green tide, or the dark eldar lance list?

2.) My army list. I cant finalize my 1850 blood angel list, but I cant seem to wrap it up. I have what I believe is a strong 1750 list, however this is an 1850 tournament, so I need help in analyzing the strength and weaknesses of my list. The core 1750 points of my list are:

Blood Angels

HQ
125 Librarian with Jump Pack
Unleashed Rage, Blood Lance

Troops
200 10 man Tactical Squad w./ Lascannon, Plasma gun, Combi Plasma
180 5 man Assault Squad in Razorback w./ Lascannon; w./ Power Weapon, Meltagun
180 5 man Assault Squad in Razorback w./ Lascannon; w./ Power Weapon, Meltagun
225 10 man Assault Squad w./ Jump Packs, Powerfist, 2x Flamers

Elite
65 Sang Priest w./ Power Weapon (w./ Raz Squad)
65 Sang Priest w./ Power Weapon (w./ Raz Squad)

Heavy
135 Predator - Lascannons
135 Predator - Lascannons
150 Dreadnought with MM and H.Flamer in Drop Pod (aka DDM)

Fast Attack
145 Predator - Baal - Ass Cannon, Bolters
145 Predator - Baal - Ass Cannon, Bolters

With the last 100 point, do I add a Sang Priest to the Assault marines squad with lib, or throw in a 5 man scout squad with fist, or 2x MMelta Attack Bikes, speeders???

I've only played 1 tournament, so I can definitely relate. My advice is to KNOW the rules/ranges/stats of your army. You shouldn't have to look up the range and strength of a Lascannon every shooting phase (like my 1st opponent, who was also playing in his first tournament, did).

Know your army's rules (abilities, psychic powers, etc.)in and out (even though there are things that need to be FAQ'ed with BA).

Don't be afraid to call someone out on slow play, or ask a rules question. When in doubt ask a judge.

Be on time/early to all your games.

As far as list advice goes, I don't know a ton about BA except playing against them twice. That said Sanguinary Priests are pretty awesome so that's what I'd do. I do play Plague marines though and think that Feel No Pain is the best of all of the USR's.

All that said, have fun and tear em up!

Know Your Army is definitely rule #1. Rule #2 would be Know the Rulebook; it's all too easy to half-remember rules and do things wrong that cost you the game.

Beyond that: play with your army. As much as possible. Knowing what you can and can't do is critical, as it being able to judge distances, etc, and these are things you will only get by playing.

Eat a real meal before the tourney, and have some snacks/drinks for during it; you would be surprised how badly your body can wreck your concentration in a long tournament. Soda is generally a poor choice because of the caffine/sugar, but it's better than nothing.

Regarding your list:
Tacticals seem pretty useless. You have fire support from your vehicles, why do you have some foot goons doing the same?

Lascannon Razorbacks seem mediocre. Las/Plas has more firepower and isn't neutered by a single Weapon Destroyed (on an AV11 platform, I should add.)

Consider Sanguine Shield on the Libby? I assume his job is to hang with the Assault Squad and advance behind the vehicle wall. Unleash Rage is sweet and all, but having more dudes and more units alive is even better.

Las-only Predators suffer from the same problem as the Razorbacks. Have you ever tried the "dakka Pred"? (AC, 2x HB) It's surprisingly effective and pretty cheap. If you're determined to keep Las in that slot, AC/TL Las seems like a better choice.

Not sure about those Priests; one seems like a no-brainer to go with the flying men, but what's the other one do? Your dudes are already hiding in vehicles, FNP is a marginal boost.

I'm not really sure about the Dread. Seems fine, but he's a little out of place in the list. He shows up turn 1, wrecks a vehicle with MM, and then dies? Seems like you could do better than that.

I'm not keen on split vehicle/jump armies, but this seems like a reasonable build, the above things aside. Get yourself a little more firepower, though- it just doesn't feel "threatening" enough. BA really want to be getting all up in someone's grill, either by assaulting or by DSing in and meltaing them all to hell.

Awesome and constructive feedback guys, just what I was looking for! As for my thoughts to the comments above:

Regarding your list:
Tacticals seem pretty useless. You have fire support from your vehicles, why do you have some foot goons doing the same?

Well, Im guessing at least of 1/2 the games (up to 2/3rds of games) will require some soft of objective grab. These guys will be able to hold those rear objectives and bring some additional firpower with the lascannon and 4 plasma gun shots when things get close.

Lascannon Razorbacks seem mediocre. Las/Plas has more firepower and isn't neutered by a single Weapon Destroyed (on an AV11 platform, I should add.)

I like the idea of alpha striking any other mobile armies, and I need to be able to take out transports and armour, since I feel fairly confident in the assault.

Consider Sanguine Shield on the Libby? I assume his job is to hang with the Assault Squad and advance behind the vehicle wall. Unleash Rage is sweet and all, but having more dudes and more units alive is even better.

With my 3+ save and possible 4+ cover from the vehicles, I think i should normally be in good shape. If anything, I may keep the libby in 6" of razorbacks to give them a 5+ cover.

Las-only Predators suffer from the same problem as the Razorbacks. Have you ever tried the "dakka Pred"? (AC, 2x HB) It's surprisingly effective and pretty cheap. If you're determined to keep Las in that slot, AC/TL Las seems like a better choice.

Oh, by Las Pred im running the AC/ 2x Las cannons. The BAs do the dakka pred (one of my favorite gunships) only better, with the 2x Baal Preds I have (2x HB and wtin linked assault cannon)

Not sure about those Priests; one seems like a no-brainer to go with the flying men, but what's the other one do? Your dudes are already hiding in vehicles, FNP is a marginal boost.

Well, this turns a nominal 5 man squad into a 6 man squad with 2x power weapons, furious charge and feel no pain.

I'm not really sure about the Dread. Seems fine, but he's a little out of place in the list. He shows up turn 1, wrecks a vehicle with MM, and then dies? Seems like you could do better than that.
I sort of agree, im thinking of how I can get in an honor guard squad in with Plasma Guns (they also have a built in priest with FNP and Furious Charge).

I sort of have some of that same feeling. I could drop the dread on drop pods for another 5 man assault squad with jump packs, power fist, melta gun and combi melta... But the DDM is one of my favorite units. It forces my opponent to deal with it or get messed up with MM, Heavy Flamer and Dread CC weapon attacks. If I drop this though, I have 250 points free...

All the above are good points but the number one thing isnt on the game side. Its drink lots of water and have advil on hand. After 8 hours if you drink lots of pop. Between the heat the noise level and think hard all day you will end up with a serious headache, which kills the fun of a tourney. So hydrate and have somesort of headache medicine on hand. That way you can stay relazed and enjoy the esperience. :)

Good Luck
